The Rolling Stones - The Lost Sessions Vol.2 - The Auction Reels (2005) FLAC

GENRE:  Rock
FORMAT: Lossless (Flac)
SIZE: 470mb (3% Recovery)

On their second volume, Empress Valley were hard pressed to offer anything “lost”. These are all well-known Stones tracks and in 2005 had been widely available to knowledgeable fans. So the only advantage was the excellent sound quality.

Here was Keith Richards singing Gimme Shelter while Mick Jagger sang You Got The Silver, which was mostly a Keith composition. The version of Loving Cup here has the lead guitar nicely leading the band with a vocal from Jagger that turns rowdy at the end.
Brown Sugar, is that Eric Clapton on guitar? That’s the one most collectors call the “alternate” Brown Sugar. No slide guitar from Clapton or loud backing vocals from Keith marks this as an outtake with a different guitar part instead. In fact, some songs are so familiar, two takes of Sister Morphine, which are identical except perhaps one is slightly louder. They differ from the released version with a punchier bass.
So we come to the “lost” sessions of this volume. The multiple versions of Brown Sugar and Bitch. These are not different takes but “playbacks”. The engineer starts and stops the tracks during playback. Someone is listening. For Empress Valley to list them here, without notation, seems wrong as on first appearance, it’s as if a session is offered. The sound cuts off whenever the tape is stopped. It’s not an error on the disc.
Now who would want a “lost” session like this? You can do this at home with your remote.
The bootleg closes with two songs from Goat’s Head Soup, again filler material but in excellent quality. Winter is raw, slightly out of focus with the keyboards or synths too dominant. The vocals are different.

The Rolling Stones - The Lost Sessions Vol.1 - Sweet Black Angel (2005) FLAC

GENRE:  Rock
FORMAT: Lossless (Flac)
SIZE: 407mb (3% Recovery)

16 outtakes from 1968-70, 7 are instrumentals. Excellent soundboard stereo.

What was Empress Valley thinking with Sweet Black Angel? Presumably they had found better quality recordings of these bootleg songs and make quick money. By assembling the sessions from Nellcote, France, the first eight tracks offer a first glimpse of the Stones at work from May to September 1971 (the dates on the artwork offer contradicting information) for Exile On Main Street. Most of the rest of the tracks are from the Elektra Sessions in Los Angeles, around November 1972, by which time Exile had already been released in May.
One can only guess Empress Valley wanted to assemble the bulk of the sessions from ‘71 to ‘72. The only sessions that can be called “lost” are the seven instrumentals, almost all from the LA sessions assembled nicely together. They are led by either Mick Taylor or Nicky Hopkins with not a sign of thick-lips Jagger in them.
These then are the “jams”. The instrumentals Sweet Black Angel and Let It Loose are however not jams but fully formed songs. Potted Shrimp has a very nice interplay between Taylor (or is that Keith?) and Hopkins both driving the song into a quiet, graceful closure. This is followed by Aladdin Story, which has a spacey organ and Jim Price horn that suggests perhaps there was more to this tune. Otherwise why write the horn parts? Aladdin recalls 2000 Light Years From Home.
It may be that after Taylor left, the Stones would never be as much a blues-based outfit. Although there are many bootlegs of sessions since 1972, mostly the guitar sound is “modern” reflecting a desire to stay hip and with it or driven by a monotonous organ riff.
One instrumental, I’m A Country Boy, is from 1968, recorded at Olympic Studios in London presumably for the album Beggar’s Banquet or Let It Bleed. It has that affinity for rusticity with a rambling honky tonk piano. Probably influenced by The Band’s album of that year.
The rest of Sweet Black Angel is filler from the late ’60s. Complete songs that just had no place to go. For example the soulful ballad with strange title, Hamburger To Go. And the songs I’m Going Down and I Don’t Know Why, both of which are second division parodies of The Stones. Sound quality is excellent and perhaps that was the main reason for Sweet Black Angel.

TRACKLIST:

1. Loving Cup (Early Long Version)
2. Shake Your Hips (Early Version of Tumbling Dice)
3. Good Time Woman

The Rolling Stones - Necrophilia (2002) FLAC

GENRE: Rock | Rock'N'Roll
FORMAT: Lossless (Flac)
SIZE: 314 mb (3% Recovery)

This is the never-released album from 1971 (or was it 1972), which was pressed on a few acetates. Some acetates were sold, for a lot of money, a couple of years ago, and....surfaced on bootleg CD after a while. The songs are either completely different takes (like "Have You Seen Your Mother Baby"), or different mixes than the official versions (from Metamophosis) Pay Your Dues (the alternate version of Street Fighting Man) and the speeded-up Blue Turns To Gray are really fantastic, as Metomophosis, several of the songs features Jagger, Richards and studio musicians, and not the other Stones members.

Track7-15 > 1973-10-14: Sportpaleis AHOY (2nd show), Rotterdam, Holland

NOTES:
Odeon Theater, Birmingham, England – September 19th, 1973 (early show)

Birmingham was the final stop in England on this tour and the tape for the early show has seen several releases in the past. Birmingham Odeon 1973 (Oh Boy 1-9168) has the complete show and was released by the same label on Birmingham Odeon 1973 (Oh Boy Records PD 012).

The sound quality is very good, but the tape runs 5-6% too slow. British Tour 1973 (Stone Crazy SC 004) has worse sound than the Oh Boy releases. Other titles documenting this tape include Rainy Days In Birmingham (Stonehenge STO 002), Birmingham Odeon 1973 (Phoenix Records D357070a) and Birmingham 1973 (SOS-730919).

The most recent releases before Dog N Cat are Birmingham Remaster 1973 (IMP-N-016) and as a bonus cdr by the SODD label with Afternoon In Munich. The Dog N Cat, as well as the other recent releases, runs at the correct speed and sounds very good. The higher frequencies are emphasized with the guitars sounding very clear and distinct with the vocals.

The bass can be felt more than heard, with the drums sounding very low to almost being non-existent in the mix. There is slight tape deterioration between “Happy” and “Star Star” which causes minor volume fluctuations in the left channel. All of the releases have been sourced from very low generation tapes and the IMP, SODD and DAC all are virtually hiss free indicating it comes from an even lower generation tape.

The set list reflects a further rethinking of the set list by the Stones. Various songs from Goats Head Soup appear in the set list before the band settled on four: “Star Star,” “Dancing With Mr. D.,” “Angie,” and “Doo Doo Doo Doo Doo (Heartbreaker)” to appear in most of the shows.

The third of the four was dropped for the September 13 show in Newcastle and would be employed only sporadically, appearing in at least five shows in Europe. The short introduction leads to the opening “Brown Sugar” followed by the apocalyptic “Gimme Shelter,” one of the greatest rock songs ever written. The heavy mood is alleviated by “Happy” and Jagger says, “Thank you Keith” at the end.

“Tumbling Dice” from the previous album Exile On Main Street is performed before Mick says, “Hello Birmingham…good for you. We’re gonna do a few new songs for you from our new record” before playing all the new stuff as one subset in the set list.

The final “sad song” of the set is “You Can’t Always Get What You Want” which contains a saxophone solo that foreshadows Ernie’s Watt’s interpretation of the melody almost ten years later. There is a small cut and fade before “Honky Tonk Women.”

Birmingham is a tight performance and the audience in the Odeon didn’t know it at the time, but would be Mick Taylor’s penultimate show in England with The Rolling Stones and, unless the tape for the evening show appears, the final live document in the archives.

Sport Paleis Ahoy, Rotterdam, The Netherlands – October 14th, 1973

The second disc contains fragments of the two shows on October 13th (and not October 14th as it says on the cover) at the Sports Palace in Rotterdam making it a duplicate of the first disc of Keep Your Pussies Clean! (Dandelion 122/01).

Both tape sources are fair to good with a distance from the stage. According to one collector, the Dandelion sounds more crisp while the DAC sounds more bass heavy.

Quite why DAC include this disc along with the Birmingham is a mystery. There is no obvious relationship between the two concerts except they occur on the same tour, and including this disc would make more sense if it were included with the other tapes from Rotterdam giving it thematic unity. As it is, it is tacked on here with the wrong date, something which the label should have caught.

Otherwise, The Stones held their rehearsals for the 1973 European tour from August 18th to the 23rd at De Doelen, Kleine Zaal in Rotterdam.

Taylor uses extra grease for his slide in “Brown Sugar” and it is good to have a rare version of “Doo Doo Doo Doo Doo (Heartbreaker)” from the evening show in this collection. There is a cut before “Midnight Rambler” but the songs are otherwise complete.

Birmingham Odeon is a good release if one is looking for the Birmingham show on a silver disc, but the superfluous second disc raises many questions about the motives of the label. As good as it is to have something from this great tour, nothing is achieved with this release and given that Dog N Cat are capable of producing excellent quality releases hopefully they can do so for these tapes again in the future.

NOTES:
The Rolling Stones played two shows in the state of Kentucky during the Still Lifetour in 1981.  The first was in Louisville on November 3rd.  They returned five weeks later for a show at the Rupp Arena in Lexington.  On the simply named Live At Rupp Arena 1981, Empress Valley presents the same virtually complete soundboard recording that first surfaced on Kentucky Fried Rockers Vol. 2 (Dog N Cat DAC-024).

The soundboard is very clear and has a nice balance between the rhythm section, vocals and guitars.  There are times when the soundboard misses cues like when the saxophone comes in during “Miss You” and sometimes the guitars are buried like in “Shattered.”  There are two small gaps in the tape.  The first starts five seconds in “Let Me Go,” right after the opening riff, to 1:46 and the second is in “Tumbling Dice” from fifty-two seconds to 3:29.

The performance is okay although this is a show where the band sounds a bit tired and hazy.  Mick Jagger mocks confusion about the location:  “I woke up this morning and where was I?  Shidoobee, Shidoobee Shidoobee.”  It sounds as if someone off mic tells him and he then greets Lexington.  The band tune their instruments a bit before starting “Shattered.”

The show achieves some intensity with the longer jamming numbers such as “Just My Imagination,” “You Can’t Always Get What You Want” and “Miss You.”  Listening to Wood and Richards interacting with the saxophone of Ernie Watts belies the assessment of the Stones on this tour as “pure entertainers.”  Nevertheless, this late in the tour the performances were extremely slick and professional which describes much of this performance.

Empress Valley employ a basic double slimline jewel case with photos from the tour and tour poster’s painting.  A third title with this tape was released from Europe titled Lexington, Kentucky, December 11, 1981 on Crossfire Hurricane which is probably the same edit of the two sources in the same sound quality.
