NOTES:

When Jon Anderson, disenchanted with the new direction that Yes was taking, announced his departure from the band after the huge 1987-88 “Big Generator” tour, very few people knew what the man had in mind for the future of Yes music. The answer came less than a year later when an official announcement was made that Jon had joined forces with former Yes band members Bill Bruford, Rick Wakeman and Steve Howe to sign with Arista Records and form a new group named simply “Anderson, Bruford, Wakeman, Howe”. With the task of getting Yes music back on track again, ABWH set off to record their only studio album. Completed in the summer of 1989, this album recaptured the magic of the early Yes albums these four men created in the early seventies, and, once released, gained worldwide fan and critic acclaim.

Artist Roger Dean, whose ethereal art had graced so many Yes album covers in the seventies, was asked to provide some special cover artwork for the new album, as well as a new stage design for the forthcoming world tour. Starting at Mud Island in Memphis, Tennessee on July 29th 1989, this tour took the band across North America, the U.K., Eastern Europe and Japan before ending back in the United States at Madison Square Garden in New York City on March 5th 1990. In the absence of traditional Yes bass player Chris Squire, ABWH was able to secure the talents of renowned bassist Tony Levin, a long time associate of Bill Bruford in King Crimson. Levin’s extraordinary finesse and very personal style brought new life to the old Yes material played during the tour.

To enhance the live performance of both the old and new material, ABWH also brought in Julian Colbeck, who would join the Steve Hackett band in 1990, on keyboards, and Milton McDonald on guitar. The set list for the new tour included about two thirds of the new album, as well as a few Yes classics from the early Bruford era. Strangely enough, the ABWH tour would be the first time that Bill Bruford would perform, live, songs that he had helped to compose on the “Close To The Edge” album in 1972. His departure from Yes shortly after recording the material prevented his participation in live performances at the time. With this group of unique and talented musicians playing both old and new material, ABWH concerts became incredible musical events.

The show we present here was recorded in front of 15,000 people at the Summit in Houston, Texas, on August 28th of 1989, and would be the last performance to include Tony Levin during this part of the tour. Shortly after completing the final song of the evening, “Starship Trooper”, Tony walked off and collapsed back stage. He was rushed to the hospital and diagnosed with Hepatitis. Four concerts had to be cancelled while the band quickly recruited American bass player Jeff Berlin to replace Levin until he could return. Under the circumstances, and with only three days to absorb so many complex pieces of music, Jeff did a magnificent job. The ABWH full-concert video, which was shot only a few days later in California, stands as undeniable proof of that fact. Tony Levin returned to his post for the first concert of the U.K. leg of the tour on October 20th. Sadly, the ABWH project only lasted for this one tour and ended with the formation of the Yes / ABWH Union. So here we present a very special concert in the history of a very special band.

Boston Invaders

            For nearly 70 years, the Boston Garden was one of the legendary arenas in American history. It was the home of the Boston Bruins and Celtics. All of music's greatest stars played there. Families went to watch the three-ring circus, ice shows, the rodeo, and the Harlem Globetrotters. Speeches were given  there by some of the greatest politicians of all-time, including Winston Churchill, Franklin D. Roosevelt, and John F. Kennedy. Sadly, in 1995 the old Garden closed its doors to the public for good and the new Fleet Center ushered in a new era for sports and entertainment in New England.

            This Yes show was performed at the grand old Boston Garden at a time when it was still an icon of the city of Boston. As recalled by one Yes fan that was there….”As a venue for rock concerts, the old Boston Garden was genuinely horrible. Of all the concerts I went to there, only two bands, Pink Floyd and Yes, had sound systems good enough to overcome the booming upper-bass reverberation that plagues almost every performance. Pink Floyd used extra speakers in the back of the hall to create a 360-degree soundstage. Yes had a rotating stage in the center of the floor under an amazing 360-degree sound system. For Yes, everyone in the entire building had a good seat, even the people farthest from the stage. Of the three years that Yes used the round stage (1978-1980), the 1979 show sounded the best to me, but that may have been more a matter of having a perfect seat for that show than anything else. I've lost my ticket stub but I'm pretty sure I was in the 10th row on the floor.” 

            The set list for the 1979 Summer American tour was different from the earlier TORMATO tours. This Boston show was only the second time that Yes played Arriving UFO and Leaves of Green, each of which were played only ten times during the whole tour. The remainder of the set consisted of a mixture of songs from TORMATO, their most recent album, and older material.

            This was their 93rd show of the TORMATO tour with only 9 more shows to go. At the time, no one in the audience likely suspected that this would be the last tour for this Yes line-up for over a decade. After the tour, the band members met in Paris to start rehearsals for a new album, but things didn’t quite work out the way they had planned. Rick Wakeman describes the situation this way,

             “It all worked very well up until about 1979. That’s when it really started falling apart. The problems were both internal and musical. Jon and I had formed a partnership of playing and writing and a way of working. We just felt we weren’t getting any input at all from any other areas. Everything became a struggle. We ended up recording an album which we never finished, and what happened was we got halfway through…and it was like Jon and I met one day in Paris in a little cafe and just said, ‘we’ve both had enough’. I mean the band’s just run out of…we were digging into the gold mine that just had a few nuggets left”. (1981). Just as the Fleet Center replaced the Boston Garden and ushered in a new era for New England, the loss of Anderson and Wakeman ushered in a new creative period in the life of Yes. But before this split, not long after the end of the 1979 tour, Yes were the masters of their craft and thrilled audiences at every turn. So, with this Boston show we bring you, in our opinion, one of the very best Yes performances from the year 1979.

"This is my third attempt to produce a good-quality version of the Wolverhampton show, and my most successful. I obtained a higher-quality, lower-generation stereo copy of the show from Steve "Relayerman" Wehner. Most of the stereo content of the show is preserved here, but on a few tracks - Perpetual Change and Yours Is No Disgrace, to be exact - the left channel was so damaged and muddy that I went with the right channel and Sound Forge's Acoustic Mirror audio processor, to give a stereo feel that works with the rest of the recording.

The copy of the recording is the first I have found with the tracks in what I believe is the correct order. Most have the Wakeman solo and Long Distance Runaround/The Fish transposed. This was probably done by a dubious bootlegger to make the recording fit a 90-minute cassette better than the original order; as a result, this has become the defacto sequence of the set. Note the on-stage bantering and guitar riff played by Howe which leads directly into Anderson's introduction of Perpetual Change. This is all one sequence in the set between the two pieces. I discovered this mis-ordering when working on the 30th anniversary remaster of this show in late 2001, and set the tracks in the correct order on that release. The "7 From 71" version of the show was taken from another cassette and was missing some of the banter between the boys, and I did not change the sequence on that version.

There is no way to know how many more remasters there will be of this important and complete show, or whether this one will be my last attempt, but hopefully each will be better than the last."

Tales of a Topographic Tour

    “Tonight you'll see and hear five musicians who have dedicated themselves to involving not only themselves but their audience in a shared experienced in which love is not too strong a word to apply. That is certainly at the basis of much of Jon Anderson's lyrics, together with a plea for ever growing awareness of self and others.”      Chris Welch, Melody Maker

    Welch’s words are taken from page 19 of the 1974 Yes tour book, available to all who attended the North American ‘Tales From Topographic Oceans’ tour. Jon and the band had written 4 new songs based on the ancient Sanskrit language and this tour was their attempt to share the experience with their fans. After touring Europe, Yes came to North America with the new tour. They began in Gainesville, Florida on February 7th, 1974 and quickly made their way across the continent. After 36 performances the band found themselves at the Great Western Forum in Inglewood, California. This was to be their third time at the Forum, a venue they would play seven times during their long career.

    The Forum was opened in 1967 and has played host to many concerts and sporting events. At a cost of $16 Million it was considered spectacular for the time. The Los Angeles Lakers, Los Angeles Kings and a number of other sports teams have called this site home for many years. In 1984 the Forum was even used to host the Olympic Basketball competition. For concert events, the Forum can seat 18,000 people and despite its large size can provide a great musical experience for those who attend.

    When Yes arrived at the Forum they were prepared to present material from both of their most recent albums. During the European tour, and this American tour, the set would begin with all the material from the ‘Close To The Edge’ album. The band would then introduce and perform all four parts of ‘Tales From Topographic Oceans’. Jon Anderson explains each song separately, trying to draw the audience into why each song was written. This material seemed to be received well during the tour but not all members of the band were enthusiastic about the new pieces. Of note, Rick Wakeman found TALES to be redundant and uninspiring. Was this the reason the setlist was changed? Not sure, but after presenting the established setlist in Detroit on February 28th, (PRRP 013, by the way) the band went to Hershey, Pennsylvania where the songs ‘The Remembering’ and ‘Revealing Science Of God' were cut from the setlist. There was an overflow crowd that night which delayed the beginning of the performance. Was this a necessary move given the time constraint or a convenient excuse to cut back on the TALES material? The next night, in Louisville, Kentucky ‘The Revealing Science of God’ was again part of the set but ‘The Remembering’ was again dropped, never to be included again. The Detroit audience would be the last to see ‘Tales From Topographic Oceans’ performed in its entirety. The performance at the Inglewood Forum 16 days later would only include three of the four songs from the new album.

    So, March 18th, 1974 saw Yes perform at the Great Western Forum in Inglewood, California. How was this show received by the audience? We can only present you with the words of someone who was there”

    Yes' immense popularity is one of the most unlikely in a world dominated by the lascivious likes of Led Zeppelin and brutal thrashers like the Who and Emerson, Lake and Palmer. The group's concerns are the dead opposite of the secular and hedonistic, and the sight of a rock audience paying attention to a good hour of musical interpretation of Sanskrit scriptures (as did Monday's Forum crowd) approaches the surreal.

    Yes is most enjoyable when you take it less seriously than it seems to want you to take it, and the tremendous ovations were surely responses to the music rather than expressions of gratitude for spiritual enlightenment. But Yes projects its role convincingly, with pretense, particularly singer writer Jon Anderson, a pure, innocent, white-clad eye in the midst of the musical storm.

    Although that gap between what Anderson wants to communicate and what the audience is actually getting is a slightly disorienting factor throughout the show, the sheer power and exalted complexity of the music finally shatters any reservations.

    Yes' performance on Monday night was virtually flawless, and though it offered little in the way of surprises it managed, miraculously; to avoid dryness and sterility. Abetted by a magnificent sound and lighting setup, Yes played current, middle-period and old (a tantalizing gesture that whetted the appetite for more of the earlier, more pop-oriented songs) material.

    The new music is a slight refinement of the familiar sound, a gradual, unforced progression. Like all of Yes' music, it features bold shifts, from angelically ethereal to primevally violent, and it functions on a multitude of levels. Although at odds with traditional rock 'n' roll attitudes, Yes has made it work and refreshing, challenging alternative.

The Yours Is No Disgrace "Through The Ages" mix is a mosaic of 30 years worth of performances for this classic Yessong.  It is NOT intended to be a "best of" montage, but rather a journey of its' different incarnations (both good and bad), and the many ways the band has presented it through the years.  And You & I has been restored via period recordings and is presented in it's entirely: as well as some other small passages that, in no way, compromise the integrity of this concert.  The restoration techniques used in this edition were used strictly to provide continuity for the listener.

"This is the other soundboard show I got from the Union tour. I was told it was London so I compared it to an audience tape I had of the 6-29-1991 show and its the same. I didn't tweak this one at all other than disc fades and few small smooth-overs. I believe a version of this soundboard is floating around already as I had it. That version is not quite as good in quality and it is songs only with no in-between song chatter. This version has a lot of it, but like the Burgettstown, PA show it is missing solo spots for Rabin and Wakeman. Awaken is here, though!  As before, the sound engineer supposedly taped certain songs on a 90 min tape so thats all you get. This is better quality than the Burgettstown, PA show."

"Here's some trivia for you...the Tormato tour stop in Louisville on 4/13, 1979 was advertised as a 'big surprise' by the local heavyweight rock station, WLRS-102 FM as Yes was the 102nd concert promoted by WLRS... they attempted to get Pink Floyd as a surprise band to make a double bill....that fell through and their last stop they tried to pull out was free beer for the sold out Freedom Hall crowd, but the promoter would not go with that due to liability and under-age drinking concerns....so the 102nd concert for WLRS turned out to be anti-climactic, just a normal Yes show that was POWERFUL....I need another fix of On the Silent Wings Of Freedom!"

NOTES:

            Yes were in the midst of a grueling 60 show US tour. Tonight’s performance was the 43rd gig since the tour began in April and the 7th night in a row of scheduled work. Only the cancelled show in Kansas City 3 nights earlier –from an unstable roof- gave them a reprieve. But now they were in Chicago, a city they knew quite well. The band had played here 14 times before, if you include the performance the night before this one. The International Amphitheatre was also familiar to the band. They had played this venue 9 times before, with the last visit September 24th 1978. The setlist for tonight was quite similar to what was played during their last visit. For this evening, the guys would replace ‘Silent wings of Freedom’ and ‘Don’t Kill the Whale’ with ‘And You And I’ and a Tour song; the rest of the material would remain essentially the same.
            This tour marked the 10th anniversary for the band. The tour book used at the time makes reference to this with words from Dan Hedges: “With their tenth anniversary behind them, Yes, as strong as ever, are embarking on this tour, the opening event of their second decade. Although the band is looking to the future with the same kind of energy that has always made Yes so existing, it seems not a bad time to recap some of the events of the last ten years. As an on-going idea, Yes have been around for ten years now, yet they've collectively got this strange disinterest in most things remotely concerning their past. Sure, they'll walk out on stage and blast through 'Roundabout', 'Starship Trooper', 'Siberian Khatru', and 'Close To The Edge'. That's music. They still love those as much as always, and they'll probably be playing some of them tonight. But when it comes down to things like times, dates, places, events, and slapping themselves on the back for past achievements, you'll more often than not get a mystified shrug with a "... but does it really matter?". Yes are
totally aware that it's you - the people who buy their albums and come to see them - who are the main reason why Yes remain alive and well. Ten years on, they thank you for that.

Going for the One Country of Switzerland?

Yes were off to Switzerland to record their new album, Going for the One. It was an escape from the tax man and the familiar surroundings of England. Patrick Moraz made the trip with Yes, back to his home country but did not stay with the band once they arrived. Things were just not working out between him and his bandmates. Rick Wakeman was brought in to take over the keyboards again and the band was off! Skiing in the morning, recording in the afternoon; this was the typical day for them at the time. These recording sessions would produce one of the very best Yes albums ever! With plans to move back to a song oriented album Jon still directed the band in the production of one of their most impressive epics of all time: ‘Awaken’.
In an interview in 1977, Jon said, “…I had a chance to read a book called ‘The Singer’. It’s about this Star Song which is an ageless hymn that’s sung every now and again and that inspired this song. It’s also influenced by a book I read recently about the life of Rembrandt...” The song is also noteworthy for how it was recorded. Rick Wakeman was required to produce church organ for this piece. However, the only way to get this sound was to use a real church organ, located 10 miles from the studio. A rather unique way of recording this instrument was devised, they used a telephone line. As Rick recalls, “We did it that way because that’s the way things are done in Switzerland… Their telephone lines are the highest fidelity you can imagine…So we rented a phone line, I put on the cans (headphones) and away we went. The pipe organ was recorded direct into the studio. I listened back over the cans, drove back to the studio, cut a little overdub and that was it.”
The tour to promote the album began with a performance in Toledo, Ohio July 30, 1977. Yes traversed the United States playing 55 shows to sold out venues night after night. Many who attended were pleased to see Rick back with the band. The new material was well received both during the shows and on the charts of the time.  In July of 1977 the album reached number one in England and number 8 in the U.S. After the tour of the states Yes returned to Europe to continue their tour; thirty-six cities in 45 days, a grueling schedule to say the least.
With some 68 shows under their belt on this tour, the band could do no wrong as they reached Gothenburg, Sweden on November 12, 1977. The concert featured on this PRRP release presents Yes at the height of their performance skill. The old material like ‘Close to the Edge’ is polished and performed flawlessly but still there is room for Steve and Rick to add some slight variation to their leads. At this point in the tour, the band is also very comfortable with the new material which they deliver with confidence and power. The spirits of the band also appear to be brighter as old conflicts have been put aside. Jon now feels comfortable adding the light-hearted ‘Colors of the Rainbow’ and the comedic ‘Rachmoninov’s piano concerto’ routine to the set. This last bit with Rich is reminiscent of the Peter Gabriel skits of Genesis. The more difficult days of the Tales From Topographic Oceans tour have been left behind and the band is bursting with new found energy. So listen closely and you will hear some of the best music ever performed by the band called Yes!
