NOTES:
The trials of Zeppelin’s tenth tour of the US are well known.  Their first live shows in eighteen months, they chose to begin touring in support of Physical Graffiti in the middle of January in the Midwest amidst snowstorms and Jimmy Page’s damaged finger.  Beginning in Minneapolis, Robert Plant contracted a serious flu which put a strain on his voice and the band delivered lackluster concerts.

They were originally scheduled to play in St. Louis on January 26th, but they had to cancel the show to give Plant some time to recuperate.  And, as the well-known story goes, the singer stayed in freezing Chicago while the rest of the band and crew flew the Starship to sunny Los Angeles for a short vacation.  They later reconvened in Greensboro on the 29th to play one of their all time worst concerts.  The canceled concert was made up on February 16th, right after the amazing New York shows.

When Led Note announced the release of Oh Dear I’ve Known Him Since He Was A Child (Led Note LCD1502) in the winter of 1999, the rumor was that it was a complete soundboard recording.  It turned out to be an audience recording covering only the final two thirds of the show (“Kashmir” to “Heartbreaker”) with many cuts, fade outs, and sounding extremely poor.  It was a major disappointment to say the least.  After that release another poor sounding tape surfaced and circulated in the Zeppelin collecting community.

St. Louis Blues is yet another sterling soundboard recording uncovered and released by Empress Valley.  The recording is perfectly balance between the instruments and the audience noise just like previous EV releases like Conspiracy Theory and Flying Circus.  The clarity can sometimes be a curse though hearing Bonzo talk during some quiet parts.

The band reached a highpoint in the tour playing New York just before this show and we’d hope that enthusiasm would be maintained.  But unfortunately they sound very tired at the very beginning of the concert.  “Rock & Roll” sounds sluggish and “Sick Again” is awful with Page especially hitting some bum notes.  “First thing I must say is, better late then never” Plant explains.  “I was on me back in Chicago… It was pleasant nevertheless” right before his usual talk about the cross section of music they will play.  Things begin to improve with “Over The Hills” and by “In My Time of Dying” they really hit their stride.  “Oh My Jesus.  It’s a Sunday, Oh my Jesus!”

Plant sings in the song and states, “I think after that one we should say Amen” at the song’s conclusion.  There is some guitar trouble before “The Song Remains The Same” with Plant chatting with the audience until stating that the double neck is ready, and this part of the show is also very good with a very moving version of “The Rain Song”.  After this we can begin to hear the show in its true glory at which the audience recording only hinted.  The middle third of the show is very powerful.  “No Quarter” is very good being the final electric piano only version until the 1979 shows.  The second leg of the tour will see John Paul Jones expanding the piece with the grand piano.

“Does anybody remember 1968?  Those of you without brain damage can.  This is from the first ten minutes from … our rather immaculate conception” is Plant’s intro to “Dazed & Confused” and the concluding third of the show.  The piece sounds similar to the New York performances.  The encores reveal a surprise that was unfortunately cut in the audience recording:  Zeppelin’s only cover of “Shame, Shame, Shame”, the 1963 Jimmy Reed tune, in the “Heartbreaker” solo.

Overall another excellent release by Empress Valley and a classy way to end the year.  This is a great show and definitely worth having.  The discs come in a glossy digipack with a slipcover identical in design with Conspiracy Theory, even including lots of Earl’s Court shots.  Not very imaginative but acceptable.  Let’s hope that they can one day find and release a complete soundboard for the February 14th Nassau Coliseum concert.  That would be a most exciting release.

DISC TWO:
1. Four Sticks
2. Gallows Pole
3. Whole Lotta Love
4. Communication Breakdown
5. Misty Mountain Hop
6. Rock And Roll

NOTES:
The greatest benefit in collecting unofficial releases is in hearing the rare and unique performances.  For Led Zeppelin there are none more so than the audience recording of the May 3rd show at the KB Hallen in Copenhagen.  Although they did the club tour in the UK and a mysterious tour of Europe, this is one of the least documented of any period in Zeppelin’s history.  Outside of the Ireland tapes and the April BBC broadcast, Copenhagen is the best sounding and most complete live tape of the first half of 1971.  The audience recording is very good and clear.  The music is very enjoyable but Plant’s comments are very low.  There is a small cut at the very end of “Black Dog” losing the final note, after “Stairway To Heaven,” after “Gallows Pole,”  and after “Whole Lotta Love” and “Communication Breakdown.”

Two songs, “Four Sticks” and “Gallows Pole” are found on the vinyl Live In Copenhagen July 21 1971 & Staines March 25 1969(Rock Solid Records SSA-B) along with “Dazed And Confused” from the Supershow and Loose Ends (Supercharded Records SC004) has “Four Sticks” and “Rock And Roll.”  The earliest CD release is the Australian Poles And Sticks (Black Cat BC-33), which runs at the wrong speed.  It can be found also on Copenhagen 1971 (Cobra 012), Loove! (Tarantura T2CD-9) and its European clone  The 2nd European Tour (Whole Lotta Live WLL011/12), K,B (Image Quality IQ-051/52) and on In Concert In Copenhagen (Empress Valley EVSD 113/114) which sounds very flat compared to the others.  Previews & Novelties was released in the summer of 2000 along with the other titles on this label and is one of the best sounding editions of this show.  The others are cut fifteen minutes into “Dazed And Confused” but that is not found on Equinox.

The excitement builds early with the opening numbers, so much so that Plant sings the wrong lines in the first verse of “Immigrant Song.”  After one of the heaviest “Heartbreaker” on tape there is a short delay with some in the audience causing a fuss.  “Whoa, stop stop stop, whoa, tell him, tell him, tell him to stop. Tell him if there’s any trouble we walk off, right? We go. Leave him alone, leave him alone. We can’t play if there’s going to be this going on through every number. Somebody better tell him in Danish what the score is. We cannot, we cannot play if there’s going to be a constant passage of people moving. We’d rather people sit on the floor. So sit down. We want to give you a concert of music, and we cannot do it if there’s a lot of people running around.”

The arrangements of the pieces are most similar to the BBC broadcast from the previous month.  “Dazed And Confused” in particular sounds very close with the same spaced out improvisations by the end.  Three songs from the as yet released fourth album follow including one of the earliest versions of “Stairway To Heaven” before a live audience which is introduced as something that “goes on for some time and gets nice, another profound statement.”  The new song “Going To California” and “That’s The Way” form a two song acoustic set in the middle.  Plant goes into introducing a fourth new song, saying we’re gonna try something that we have never tried before, and there’s every chance it’ll fall apart” before realizing they have to play “What Is And What Should Ever Be” next.

After the Led Zeppelin II track he continues with his nervous introduction, saying, “Now this is a thing, I was saying we’re never done before. It seems we had to come round to it, so, so here we go. This ah, this hasn’t even got a title yet, but we’ll think of one as the night goes on.”  Page tunes his guitar to some applause and Plant replies, “for your entertainment.”  What follows is the first and only live performance of “Four Sticks” by Led Zeppelin and for such a difficult song they manage to pull it off well onstage.  Plant is still able to hit the high  notes and is effective in creating a tense and ecstatic atmosphere in the venue.  The first full performance of “Gallows Pole” from the third album follows.  The arrangement differs slightly since Bonham comes in with the drums during the first verse.  The subtle build up of the studio recording is replaced by a live blast of fury.

A twenty minute “Whole Lotta Love” closes the set.  The medley includes “Boogie Chillun’,” “Cumberland Gap,” “That’s Alright” with Page doing a great James Burton impersonation, “Mess O’ Blues” and “Honey Bee,” a carry over from the previous years medley.  A long encore set begins with “Communication Breakdown” with a long bass solo by John Paul Jones and the first live reference to “Celebration Day” played in the middle.  “Misty Mountain Hop” is played for the first time and the only time as an encore.  It would form part of the regular set by the end of 1972 and the final new song “Rock And Roll,” introduced as “It’s Been A Long Time” closes the event.  Previews And Novelties is a unique Zeppelin show with a great recording and Equinox produced an excellent version of the tape.  There is very little mastering done on the tape so it has a very dynamic and natural sounding timbre.

Concert Reviews:
1973.01.07 - Robert's voice is still incredibly weak from the flu, but the band is definitely on, with Jones and Bonham shining through in this bass and drum heavy soundboard. Jimmy is incredible too, especially in Dazed And Confused, where he indulges in some exotic and strange sounding soloing in the fast section that sounds quite breathtaking amongst the bashing of the rhythm section. The instrumental machine is playing exceptionally which makes up for Robert's sickness. Whole Lotta Love was dedicated to road crew: "Any of our road managers that didn't get arrested in Sheffield. This really is a bit heathen for a Sunday night."

1973.01.27 - I think this is a much better show than previous one with exceptional playing throughout. The Whole Lotta Love Medley contains some nice improvisations and a small snippet of Ramble On, the song which was never played in its entirety.

1973.01.22 - The show finds the Zeppelin in a smaller venue on a small, carpeted stage. This seems to lend itself to the type of performance given that night - very relaxed, very loose, very cool. Sloppiness abounds, even on well-rehearsed long-time standards, and occasionally yields interesting differences. Bron-Yr-Aur Stomp was dropped out from the set for the second time during this tour. Of particular and special note is an off-hand performance of How Many More Times, which had been retired just over two years prior. You can hear the band play off of each other as they all take turns guiding the music's direction. Plant's voice is shot for most of the performance, typical for the time period. Page experiences sloppiness syndrome on occasion and keeps most of his solos a bit subdued. Bonham also seems to withhold some of the flair - extra fills and subtle nuances - for most of the show. Jones, however, other than a meandering introduction to Thank You, lays down his bass lines as excellently as ever.

Review:
This is all that is known to exist of this show, the first of the North American tour of 1970. A really raw performance, with Robert's voice immensely strong and the bass/guitar/drum interplay reaching exhilarating peaks like Heartbreaker and We're Gonna Groove. This is really good ... I hope the rest of it sees the light someday (if the rest of this show even exists!).

Disc 2
01. How Many More Times (Bolero, The Hunter, Boogie Chillun’, Truckin’ Little Mama, Mess O’ Blues, My Baby, Lemon Song)
02. Whole Lottta Love

NOTES:
This title is a 1994 release by Tarantura of Zeppelin’s April 9, 1970 show in Tampa Florida on their fifth U.S. tour.  The source for this show is a very good to excellent audience recording that is completely three dimensional, letting you experience the power and the charm of this fantastic show.  And, it is funny hearing Plant making announcements from the stage (“Well, that was anti-climatic!” he says before White Summer). It begins with the very end of the middle section to Bring It On Home.  A great pity since it sounds fun. White Summer is fantastic, with the Bron-Y-Aur section included. How Many More Times is also great with an interesting medley.  This is the first instance of Zeppelin playing Elvis’ Mess O’ Blues, which is a signature of their 1971 Whole Lotta Love medleys.  The encore of Whole Lotta Love is also very good with lots of chaos in the middle. The only drawback to the tape is several dropouts during How Many More Times.  It sounds like the tape gets crinkled in the recorder several times.

NOTES:
9-23-71, source 5
First Attack of the Rising of the Sun (Empress Valley, 4cd), Meet the Led Zeppelin (Wendy Records), Rock Carnival (Empress Valley, 5cd), & Timeless Rock (Watchtower, 3cd & 4cd)
(These labels all use a different mixture of three tapes.)
The first three cds of EV’s “First Attack” presents the fifth audience source for this show and is very good. It is almost complete both musically and between songs. Most of the introduction, a little tape after Stairway and Celebration Day are borrowed from source 1. Source 3 is used for a few seconds just before Whole Lotta Love. Two separate places in WLL are borrowed from source 1, for a total of one minute.
EV’s cds 3 and 4 of “Rock Carnival” (2016 5cd box) reissue the audio from the first three cds of “First Attack,” consolidated to two discs. They didn’t bother removing the big overlap found between cds 2 and 3 of the original title, so it’s that audio repeated back to back in the middle of disc 4 on the new double disc reissue.
Watchtower’s title is also a 3 source mix. Like EV, musically it probably uses every available second from the fifth source. The introduction on this one is entirely from source four. Dazed has two digital glitches that aren’t found on EV or Wendy. The gap after Stairway is filled (also) by source 1. Watchtower shares the same cuts in WLL but elects to use source 3 for the first gap. For the second cut, Watchtower left it alone. Watchtower reissued the title in August 2008. It has the same disc times and content as the original.
Wendy's title starts out with source one's introduction and uses it again after Stairway. The rest of the title relies mostly on source five, but elects to use source three for Whole Lotta Love.
Watchtower made fewer splices. EV and Wendy have louder music and background noise than Watchtower just a different equalization.
