NOTES:
The trials of Zeppelin’s tenth tour of the US are well known.  Their first live shows in eighteen months, they chose to begin touring in support of Physical Graffiti in the middle of January in the Midwest amidst snowstorms and Jimmy Page’s damaged finger.  Beginning in Minneapolis, Robert Plant contracted a serious flu which put a strain on his voice and the band delivered lackluster concerts.

They were originally scheduled to play in St. Louis on January 26th, but they had to cancel the show to give Plant some time to recuperate.  And, as the well-known story goes, the singer stayed in freezing Chicago while the rest of the band and crew flew the Starship to sunny Los Angeles for a short vacation.  They later reconvened in Greensboro on the 29th to play one of their all time worst concerts.  The canceled concert was made up on February 16th, right after the amazing New York shows.

When Led Note announced the release of Oh Dear I’ve Known Him Since He Was A Child (Led Note LCD1502) in the winter of 1999, the rumor was that it was a complete soundboard recording.  It turned out to be an audience recording covering only the final two thirds of the show (“Kashmir” to “Heartbreaker”) with many cuts, fade outs, and sounding extremely poor.  It was a major disappointment to say the least.  After that release another poor sounding tape surfaced and circulated in the Zeppelin collecting community.

St. Louis Blues is yet another sterling soundboard recording uncovered and released by Empress Valley.  The recording is perfectly balance between the instruments and the audience noise just like previous EV releases like Conspiracy Theory and Flying Circus.  The clarity can sometimes be a curse though hearing Bonzo talk during some quiet parts.

The band reached a highpoint in the tour playing New York just before this show and we’d hope that enthusiasm would be maintained.  But unfortunately they sound very tired at the very beginning of the concert.  “Rock & Roll” sounds sluggish and “Sick Again” is awful with Page especially hitting some bum notes.  “First thing I must say is, better late then never” Plant explains.  “I was on me back in Chicago… It was pleasant nevertheless” right before his usual talk about the cross section of music they will play.  Things begin to improve with “Over The Hills” and by “In My Time of Dying” they really hit their stride.  “Oh My Jesus.  It’s a Sunday, Oh my Jesus!”

Plant sings in the song and states, “I think after that one we should say Amen” at the song’s conclusion.  There is some guitar trouble before “The Song Remains The Same” with Plant chatting with the audience until stating that the double neck is ready, and this part of the show is also very good with a very moving version of “The Rain Song”.  After this we can begin to hear the show in its true glory at which the audience recording only hinted.  The middle third of the show is very powerful.  “No Quarter” is very good being the final electric piano only version until the 1979 shows.  The second leg of the tour will see John Paul Jones expanding the piece with the grand piano.

“Does anybody remember 1968?  Those of you without brain damage can.  This is from the first ten minutes from … our rather immaculate conception” is Plant’s intro to “Dazed & Confused” and the concluding third of the show.  The piece sounds similar to the New York performances.  The encores reveal a surprise that was unfortunately cut in the audience recording:  Zeppelin’s only cover of “Shame, Shame, Shame”, the 1963 Jimmy Reed tune, in the “Heartbreaker” solo.

Overall another excellent release by Empress Valley and a classy way to end the year.  This is a great show and definitely worth having.  The discs come in a glossy digipack with a slipcover identical in design with Conspiracy Theory, even including lots of Earl’s Court shots.  Not very imaginative but acceptable.  Let’s hope that they can one day find and release a complete soundboard for the February 14th Nassau Coliseum concert.  That would be a most exciting release.

NOTES:
This is a revised version from the one I shared previously (in 2008 on JAC and in May 2013 on Yeeshkul!). Tracks are either upgrades compared to previous versions, or new tracks (tracks 2, 11, 13, 14 and 15).

Tracks 1, 3, 5 and 6 come from a tape that David Gilmour brought to BBC Radio One studios on 28Jul92, for his interview by Nick Horne (promoting the "Shine On" box set). They are from a pre-FM source and sound slightly better than the versions on the previous release, but are still mono. For that reason, the current compilation also includes the versions of "Like A Rolling Stone" (track 2) and "Learning To Fly" (track 4) taken from the stereo FM broadcast ("The Dogs Of War" and "Signs Of Life" were on the tape but were not broadcast during the BBC show).

The most significant upgrades are the 4 untitled demos from 1993 (tracks 7 to 10), for which I received unprocessed versions some months ago. The versions circulating until now had severe NR and were very muffled. The new versions offered here have some hiss, but sound natural and clear. The 1st demo was apparently assembled from two jams, and the first part was probably accelerated in order to have the same pitch as the second part. This demo was later developed and properly recorded by the band (the resulting studio outtake can be heard on track 11). The 4th demo is also an assemblage, from four separate jams (the third one containing the ascending chord sequence that appeared later on "What Do You Want From Me").

The outtake of "Wearing The Inside Out" (track 12) is from the same source as previously ("Bear In Tree" RoIO), with muffled sound as if the tape was played back with Dolby ON while the recording was not using Dolby. It was carefully remastered in order to bring some clarity and now sounds slightly better than the previous version.

The last 3 tracks are completely new, and form together an 11 minute instrumental suite. These outtakes probably come from an early version of "The Division Bell" album, and reveal that the first intention of the Floyd was to make a long instrumental piece where "Cluster One" segues into "Marooned", and then into a third part with percussions. This third part was abandoned for the final version of the album, but its harmonies were re-used in the bridge of "High Hopes". Please note that this instrumental suite was given to me with plenty of digi-noises, crackles and clicks, and was almost unlistenable in its rough form. I used de-clicking and de-crackling methods in order to make it listenable – and even enjoyable - but you can still hear some kind of "surface" noise or saturation during the loud parts. There is still hope to get a better (cleaner) version in the future. In the meantime, this is the best as it could sound.

This new year will see the 20th anniversary of "The Division Bell" album, so it seems to be a perfect time to share these upgraded and new rarities.

Cozy Powell - The Bedlam Years (1968-1999) 2009 FLAC+MP3

GENRE: Hard Rock
FORMAT: Lossless (Flac)  | Mp3 (CBR Stereo 320kbps)
SIZE: 925 mb (3% Recovery) | 336 mb (3% Recovery)

Bedlam (originally known as Beast when it formed in 1972) was a British hard rock band featuring singer Frank Aiello (from Truth), guitarist Dave Ball (from Procol Harum), bassist Dennis Ball (formerly with Long John Baldry), and drummer Cozy Powell (formerly with Jeff Beck) They did a self-titled album produced by Felix Pappalardi (producer of Cream member of Mountain) in 1973 before breaking up in 1974

This band should have just as big as Led Zeppelin The signs were where all moody and magnificent blues rock guitarist of the highest caliber in the form of Dave Ball (from Procol Harum) a rock steady thundering bassist - Dennis Ball (formerly with Long John Baldry) - vocals from a Cockney banshee Frank Aiello (from the truth tablen) and drummer Mr. Cozy Powell from 1973 debut "Bedlam" album remains a classic
Considered one of England's best drummers and a lot of demand for rock and pop Cozy Powell was almost legendary for a heavy hit style that could be done to work with many types of rock music, whether for the thundering pop productions helmed by Mickie Most Black Sabbath Emerson Lake & Powell or even his own solo work (notably "Dance with the Devil" which was a major English hit in 1973)
Powell began his professional music career in 1965 with sorcerers eventually decommissioning work with Jeff Beck after Beck left the Yardbirds in 1971, Powell formed Bedlam, but eventually abandoned this project to produce singles such as "Dance with the Devil" He later imageas Cozy Powell's Hammer, which broke up in 1975 after a brief sabbatical, he joined Rainbow helps to give the band a section thunderous rhythm before exiting after four years and four albums in 1980, always in demand for the drum seat, he alternated between session work and working in different bands, including the Michael Schenker Group, Whitesnake and Black Sabbath never staying in one band for very long
