POST INFO
1980 was the dawning of a new era for Black Sabbath, they enlist former Elf and Rainbow vocalist Ronnie James Dio and produce a masterpiece in Heaven and Hell. The album does well and the band enjoys a lot of success with the record, it is their highest charting record in the UK since 1975 and it goes gold in the US at the latter end of the year.

The band waste little time and hit the road first in Europe and the UK before an extensive American tour but there were some issues brewing within the band. Original drummer Bill Ward, who was battling alcoholism, did not and could not continue and abruptly left the band mid tour. Interestingly enough the first to be offered the drum stool was future Sabbath drummer Cozy Powell who declined the spot in 1980 and the band chose American Vinnie Appice to fill the spot, he responded in spades as his hard hitting style fit perfectly with the band.

The band played a short tour of Japan in November 1980, their first in the country that consisted of 6 concerts in six days and also Ronnie James Dio’s first tour of Japan since February 1978. Tarantura has a couple of previous releases documenting the tour, the first was the Meloik In Japan that documents the November 16 early show and the Stand Up And Shout box set containing shows from November 17, 20, and 21. This leaves only the November 18 show from the Sun Plaza in Tokyo left and what do all these releases have in common, they are all from the Mr Peach archives.

The recording for the late show featured here is clear and very powerful with an excellent well balanced sound and could easily be mistaken for a soundboard recording, it is very similar in tone to the afternoon show and is another Peach masterpiece. You have no real problem picking out the instruments in the recording, there is wonderful separation between the bass and guitar and is a real joy to listen too. The crowd is very quiet and respectful and there is no interference by the taper, obviously they are mesmerized by the band.

The sound of rain and the tolling of a bell signals the introduction piece of Supertzar over the PA and the music crawls onstage in the form of a very heavy War Pigs, in the review of the early show AA states that it was a “weird choice” for an opener and I am in agreement although it superbly played version. Vinnie Appice injects a new enthusiasm to the song and his drum fills are incredible and he seems to be driving the song at times. The band waste no time and kick full throttle into Neon Knights, the last song to be written and recorded for the Heaven and Hell record and certainly one that gets the audience’s attention. Ronnie is in great voice (as always) and the band hit a stride with the song and Tony nails the solo. After the obligatory Thank you, Ronnie says how nice it was to see you “twice today” and introduces the next song and one Geezer Butler to start the song “N.I.Beezer”. Of all the Ozzy era material I think this is my favorite when sung by Ronnie, second being Black Sabbath. He adds a whole new direction to the song, fit with aggression and in my opinion makes the lyrics come alive with Lucifer being the master manipulator.

Children Of The sea is dedicated to the “people of Japan”, the first song written by the combo of Dio / Iommi is majestic in this recording, Vinnie is again playing superbly. His timing is on and he is going for it and pushes the rest of the band and Ronnie is singing with detail and passion, we also get to hear Geoff Nichols add some moody and haunting almost chorale sounds to the songs.

Ronnie gives special acknowledgement to a group in the audience and refers to them as “his people”, they are glad to have him band and performing for them and the band lumbers into a heavy Sweet Leaf. The song is not only talking about the wonders of marijuana but a vehicle for the band to take a break and let Vinnie pummel the audience, his two and half minute solo is fast paced and features his trade mark fill’s and the crowd roar their approval at its conclusion.

There is a tape flip at the songs end, the edit is very smooth and nothing is lost and Ronnie introduces Lady Evil with a nice Geezer bass intro. Probably the most up tempo and feel good song on the record, I love Tony’s solo also, his use of the wah petal gives the song a swirling feel coupled with the nice fat bass. An epic Black Sabbath rounds out the first disc, the band give an incredible version of the song. I read that Tony Iommi was so serious about this song that he did not like any kind of improvisation and would not let a band member play it live until it was perfect.

The Dio sung versions are full of dramatic horror, he obviously liked to sing the song and his approach, while different from the Ozzy sung classic is on par with it. There are signs of life from the audience, Tony rips into the fast riffing section and the clap in time and Ronnie sings the hallowed lyric “This is the end my friend….” followed again by Iommi playing an incredible solo……classic sums it up.

The second disc starts with nice long Heaven And Hell, if there was no improvisation in Black Sabbath well there certainly is during the this one. The song starts out almost informally with a little vocal improvising from Ronnie and a few nice blues leads from Tony, the backbone of Appice and Butler lay the foundation. Tony’s use of effects are particularly effective on this song, he weaves the notes as if he where plucking them from the air in wizard like fashion, and Geezer even gets into a little of it to and for a minute or two it is probably as funky as the band could get. Ronnie comes back onstage and leads the crowd through the audience participation section of the song but they seem very distant in this recording, it almost sounds like Ronnie is employing member of the audience to help him get the audience to give him the response he is looking for, when they do he salutes them with an “Arigato !”

The band play a heavy Iron Man that leads into a nice run of guitar solos and instrumental improvisation, the first instrumental section has a riff that sounds very much like Hole In The Sky. There is some great interplay between Tony and Geezer followed by Iommi just ripping into a flurry of notes that goes for the jugular and then expands it to some blues tinged notes with a slight flair of jazz, there is even one small section he sounds as if he took a page from Eddie Van Halen’s book of tricks. His final solo section has him playing notes in a spiral fashion with heavy wah that sounds very Hendrix inspired that leads into one of my favorite Iommi pieces from Master Of Reality, the beautiful and haunting Orchid. All this leads into a very dynamic and fast paced Die Young. The band fires on all cylinders and the song has it all, Geoff Nichols keyboards give the song that little extra and the fast tempo does not falter, one must only hear the songs ending with Ronnie screaming “Die Young…Die Young” over Tony simply just ripping and unbelievable solo to end it in dramatic fashion. The rather quiet audience bring the beast out for one more, a rather sedate sounding Paranoid with its wonderful Heaven And Hell reprise is a traditional way to end the show.

The packaging is typical Tarantura, gatefold sleeve with Ronnie on the front and Tony on the back, pictures of the ticket stub and master cassettes and a great picture of the band captured live in full flight with Ronnie having a great big smile, a remembrance to days past indeed. Another superb Peach recording and superb Tarantura release. With the recent announcement that Tony Iommi is battling cancer himself it makes documents like this all the more important and we must consider ourselves lucky to enjoy a small part of the huge legacy that the Black Sabbath family has given us, the fans. God bless Tony and many wishes for a speedy recovery.

NOTES:

The concert has been released under such titles as Epilogue – Rising Arrow-047, Still I’m Sad – Rising Arrow-008, Triumph & Tragedy – Rising Arrow-014, and Silence Prayer – Tarantura TCDRAINBOW-6-1,2 (part of the Giboshi box set).

The recording used here is a fantastic Mr. Peach source recorded very close to the stage and is a dynamic, well balanced excellent source that is a phenomenal listen. There is a very small amount of tape hiss in quiet parts but does not interfere and very little interference around the recorder.

The recording starts a full ten minutes before the concert begins, the two SE tracks at the beginning are actually music being played over the PA system, the first is Hendrix’s Highway Chile and the second is Jethro Tull’s Bungle in the Jungle and a quiet conversation can be heard.

The scan of the ticket stub on the inside gatefold says row A, if that is indeed the first row and where Mr. Peach recorded from is very interesting. After reviewing the KISS Crazy Killer Whales title I had to dig out my KISSOLOGY Vol. 1 set to watch the Budokan 1977 concert and there are many clear shots of the audience in the front row and was wondering how it would be possible to change tapes without being seen.

The crowd is very quiet for Dorothy’s introduction until the “….we must be over the rainbow” and they cheer in anticipation. After the brief instrumental warm up the band launches into Kill The King, although the band is playing very well the song has a relaxed feel.

Ronnie’s says the band is glad to be back at the Budokan to end the “Trials and Tribulations” and introduces Ritchie’s solo that leads to Mistreated, his solo is augmented by David Stones keyboards that give it a heavy feel, the crowd claps in unison with Cozy’s bass drum stomps at the beginning and there are a couple of girls shouting “Ritchie”.

His solo is begins kind of trippy as he plays not a flurry of notes but  very slow and at times almost Hendrix like, of course the crowd claps along with him but there is no tension in the air and Blackmore plays a somber version of the track.

Ritchie can be heard tuning his guitar between songs, it is obvious he takes the next song seriously and Ronnie gives the regular introduction speech about guessing the next song. I enjoy the Greensleeves solo spot, as with most of the shows on this tour he begins almost ho down style and this version is very gentle.

Again as the band starts 16th Century Greensleeves the relaxed feel is still there, obviously the band is winding down after another successful tour, Ronnie is in strong voice and has no problem hitting the high notes as he sings “Higher…..Higher” with conviction. Ronnie introduces a gentleman to speak to the audience and lead them in a silent prayer for Sapporo and for a minute the large crowd goes quiet, such a huge contrast to American audiences who would take the time to shout and cheer. If anyone knows what the prayer was for please leave a comments as I would be interested in knowing. At its conclusion the audience cheers and Ronnie’s introduction to the next song is simple, “Catch The Rainbow”.

GENRE: Hard Rock
FORMAT: Lossless (Flac)

Recorded live at Sports Arena, San Diego, CA on September 3, 1970.

Another excellent show from this string of dates in California! A rowdy crowd and equipment problems with Page's acoustic guitar causes the group to abandon Bron-Yr-Aur and they get right into Since I've Been Loving You. The playing at this concert, as in all during this run, is slick, exciting, and powerful! The closing medley is a long one full of obscure songs that sounds great, and a manic encore closes this show.

Notes:

Continuing their current run of recordings featuring the Japanese tours of Japan, this time we are treated to a fantastic recording and show from Hiroshima in 1978. First thing that hits you, aside from the excellent quality of the recording is the aggressive performance. From the time the band breaks into Kill The King it sound more like kill the audience, it is that powerful. Well balanced all instruments have great clarity with Dio’s vocals nicely up front, aside from members of the audience who shout at times wildly for their hero, one Ritchie Blackmore. The audience does not detract from the recording or become overbearing but more like part of the enjoyment as they are clearly enjoying themselves. After the initial onslaught of Kill The King and Mistreated, the band settle the intro the 16th Century Greensleeves a group of people cheer loudly for Ritchie and chat during the quiet section and then are deafened as he slams into the main riff of the song.

“She Has Done…Done…Done….” sings Ronnie as you are pummeled into submission, great version of the song. The quiet guitar solo intro has the crowd clapping as the band starts the first epic, Catch The Rainbow. I never get tired of the Dio era versions of this song, he puts so much into the song and it usually the source of inspired and beautiful playing by Blackmore and this version is no different. Mr. Peach must have been very close to stage, you can clearly hear the echo effect to Ronnie’s vocals as well as some subtle keyboard fills I have not noticed on other versions.

“This song we would like to do for the Captain and Tenille, or Mom and Dad as they are more affectionately known, is a song about a man who climbs to the top of Mount Fujiama” is the spirited intro and a almost hoedown intro proceeds a quick flash of Lazy played at lightning speed until the they start Man On The Silver Mountain. Wildly received it is indeed a great version that sounds very powerful in this recording as the crowd claps in time. David Stone breaks into a great keyboard solo during the blues jam and for a minute it was almost like listening to Stormy Monday from the Allman Brothers at Fillmore East show until Ronnie says “What’s this ? A little small for me” talking about a bra thrown onstage. The proceedings are stopped as they try to find the owner and from the sounds Bob Daisley gets the souvenir, a hilarious moment indeed.

As with the other Japanese dates the Improvisation is the familiar Night People, this time with some a Donnie Osmond reference, the crowd is enjoying this bit of improvisation and clap along. Cozy Powell shows “lovely” into the mike as the band continues to joke around and interact with their adoring audience, As Ronnie introduces the new band members Ritchie plays a little riff that almost sounds like the jam Elvis’ band used to play as he introduced his band, it is obvious that the band are enjoying themselves. The second epic Still I’m Sad, the Rainbow answer to Space Truckin’ is up, again a vehicle for improvisation and soloing, it seems to calm the crowd down and down right respectful as Ritchie plays his Beethoven Sinfonie nr. 9 d-moll op. 125 that leads into the keyboard and drum solos. The crowd gives Cozy’s solo a nice round of applause and the band launches into the ending coda and wring every last note out.

The crowd praises the group with applause and chants if “Ritchie Ritchie” and is obvious they will not leave until they hear more and Blackmore answers with a flurry of notes with a keyboard drone accompany that leads into a seldom played (for 1978) Do You Close Your Eyes, clocking in at ten minutes the song disintegrates into Blackmore’s guitar hysteria filled with howling feedback that boarders on psychedelia and disorientation all in one. The concert ends as Swan Lake is played over the PA system, a fantastic end to a fantastic concert.

The packaging is similar to most of the others from this series, a Full color glossy gatefold sleeve, the cover being a reproduction of a concert ticket, presumably the one used by Mr. Peach. The inner picture has the venue and master cassettes on one side and a great live shot of Ronnie on the other with the notation “Ronnie James Dio was finally laid to rest on June 1, 2010 at 3:33 pm at Forest Lawn, Hollywood Hills, Ca.” a nice gesture by Tarantura to recognize RJD. The recording is up there with the previous release “Short But Hard and Heavy” as one of the better recordings from the tour. With other labels releasing titles featuring RJD, the nice packaging and recordings combined with very tastefully mastering make this series of Rainbow titles a nice part of my collection and are highly recommended.

Relayerman Notes:
"This is the other soundboard show I got from the Union tour. I was told it was London so I compared it to an audience tape I had of the 6-29-1991 show and its the same. I didn't tweak this one at all other than disc fades and few small smooth-overs. I believe a version of this soundboard is floating around already as I had it. That version is not quite as good in quality and it is songs only with no in-between song chatter. This version has a lot of it, but like the Burgettstown, PA show it is missing solo spots for Rabin and Wakeman. Awaken is here, though!  As before, the sound engineer supposedly taped certain songs on a 90 min tape so thats all you get. This is better quality than the Burgettstown, PA show."

8. Walkin' the Dog - 3:47

Total Time: 44:45

Notes:
Not perfect but very good sounding FM broadcast - kinda sounds like the tuner wasn't perfectly dialed in on the station.
This show was also released on cd by Mongoose records but in inferior quality. The original vinyl has a ninth track, Walk This Way from the Agora Ballrom, Chicago March 23, 1978. I didn't include it here wanting to keep this show filler-free, as well, that show is available in a complete form.
No sound manipulation or alteration was done except an edit was made at the end of side one and beginning of side two to make them run seemless.

NOTES:
If you love, or even like, Rainbow’s 1976-78 material, you MUSTacquire this latest edition of Tarantura’s magnificent run of vintage live Rainbow shows.  There are multiple reasons for this recommendation.

The first reason is that this is a Mr. Peach recording.  The title’s beautiful jacket, which, when opened and laid flat displays a stunning, panoramic image of Blackmore and band on stage and in action under the huge rainbow, also has an image inside of the jacket of a tape player/recorder and two Sony cassettes that are presumably Peach’s masters.

As with all Peaches, this recording is deep, powerful, and balanced with only trace, minor levels of fleeting distortion in some of Dio’s comments between some tracks.  There is, however, absolutely no distortion in any of the music.  This leads to the second reason for recommending this title.

From the start of the show, where they perform their snippet of “Over the Rainbow”, you know that this is going to be something special.  Disc 1 (which is a work of art in itself) contains the throttling opener of “Kill the King”, but the show really kicks into higher gears with “Mistreated”.  During Blackmore’s opening riffs of this song the audience can be heard cheering loudly, in unison, to what were probably Blackmore’s prompts between notes.

This is an awesome part of the listening experience.  Dio’s performance in this song is, as ever, simply amazing.  Vocal ranges from low to high are captured clearly in the recording and not overshadowed by the thunderous, driving sounds from Powell and Bain.  “16 Century Greensleeves” is preceded by Blackmore’s beautiful classical soloing that initially contains some anxious audience reactions, but that quickly disappears so you only hear the amazing music.

After laying waste during the song, the next track is “Catch the Rainbow”, which finds many members exclaiming “niji!” during the song’s prelude.  The clarity of the recording is evidenced by the bell of Powell’s ride cymbal accents at the opening of this track, which are as present as are his hi-hats.  In this song, as well as “Man on the Silver Mountain”, Dio steadily demonstrated his superiority and creativity as a premiere vocalist.  Particularly impressive was his soloing (with cascading echo) after the “improvisation” in “Man on the Silver Mountain” that found him singing about a “sweet angel” that simply needs to be heard to be appreciated.

Disc 2, in some contrast to disc 1, may be viewed as the powerhouse of this great title.  Beginning with Carey’s great keyboard solo, “Stargazer” is then performed in epic proportion and dimension because of Blackmore’s extended, killer solo (with slide) as Powell, Bain and Carey locked-in big time behind him.  After what must’ve been an exhausting version of “Stargazer”, they continue without hesitation into an excellent “Still I’m Sad”, which included Powell’s solo and then a solo by Blackmore that inexorably launched into a wicked version of “A Light in the Black”.

The audiences’ collective head must’ve been spinning as just listening to this show is engrossing and without letdown.  In sum, this is simply an incredible concert that was captured in its entirety and now presented in this most beautiful Tarantura production.  This leads to another reason for recommending this title.

As mentioned above, the jacket is beautiful and the discs display separate shots from the same group of pictures used on the sleeve.  You cannot, as a Rainbow fan, expect anything better for the full experience of this concert than what Tarantura has done on this title.  Highly recommended, without reservation.
