The Beatles - The Peter Sellers Tape - Remastered (2011) FLAC

GENRE: Rock
FORMAT: Lossless (Flac)
SIZE: 161 mb (3% Recovery)

This is the famous tape collection of early White Album era early mixes given to the actor Peter Sellers by his friend Ringo in 1968. Twenty-one years later, in 1989, this tape was put up for auction by a close relative after Peter's death. Possibly one of the most important tapes of studio sessions to surface from that time it first appeared on CD in 1990 on Unsurpassed Masters Vol.4 from Yellow Dog, but was issued in better quality by Masterdisc who claimed they used the Master tape.
This issue is remastered from the Masterdisc issue (MDCD001) of "The Peter Sellers Tape" - the best known source of this famous tape.
All track pitch, phase and level corrected and tape drop-outs repaired.
Released by Helter Skelter (HSR 04) in 20th March 2011.

The Peter Sellers tape was a reel to reel tape made by Ringo for Peter Sellers during the filming of the Magic Christian film. It features rough versions of some of the White album tracks - and a unique "message" to Peter that if "you want to hear some more crazy music, you have to turn the tape over" made by Ringo (complete with dogs barking and other sound effects - very "Goon Show" style). Some of the mixes mimic the mono white album mixes - some are unique.

 Nathan East : Bass
 Greg Phillinganes : Keyboards
 Steve Ferrone : Drums

2nd & 3rd show are twin drums (Steve Ferrone & Phil Collins) (this first show not!)

NOTES:
It has become an Eric Clapton tradition to play an extended engagement of shows at the Royal Albert Hall.  Normally a time to experiment with different themes and playing with different musicians, this began on the August tour with six shows.  Mark Knopfer and Phil Collins on the final two shows joined the band and on January 8th Sting and Steve Winwood joined them onstage for the encores “Money For Nothing” and “Sunshine Of Your Love.”

These shows were professionally recorded for a planned live album but Polydor, after releasing the Crossroads boxset and The Cream Of Eric Clapton were concerned about saturating the market with Clapton product.  From the last three RAH shows “Miss You” from January 10th and “I Shot The Sheriff”, “Hung Up On Your Love”, “Tearing Us Apart” and “Layla” from January 12th were intended for this project.

Poor sounding audience tapes exist for the concerts on January 6th and 8th, but almost complete soundboard did surface for the final three and various labels have utilized the tapes.  The EC Is Here label attempted to create this project with The Unreleased Live Album 86/87 (DJ Copy 33/34) which includes “Holy Mother” and “Miss You” from the 10th, “Tearing Us Apart” from the 11th, and “Crossroads,” “White Room,” “Hung Up On Your Love,” and “Layla” from the 12th.  The Electric Monkey label released The Unreleased Live Album 1986-87 (EM04) with “Miss You” from the 10th and “Crossroads” and “White Room” from the 12th.

Silver Rarities released the complete January 12th concert on On Tour 87 Parts 1 & 2 (SIRA CD-5, 6).  All three shows were released on 3 Nights (Zigzag Records) in 1999 and five years later Mid Valley released Romantic Isolation.  The Mid Valley covers the same ground as the Zigzag release by presenting the three soundboard recordings in excellent quality but is cleaner than the others and can be considered to be definitive.

British rhythm and blues revival act Big Town Playboys are the opening act for each of the nights and Clapton is joined on stage by Mark Knopfler, Nathan East (bass), Greg Phillinganes (keyboards), and on January 10th with Steve Ferrone on drums.

Royal Albert Hall, London, England – January 10th, 1987

The first two discs document the January 10th show.  It is clear and well balanced with hints of distortion as the show goes on.  Also for thirty seconds in “Layla,” between 6:05 to 6:35 it switches to mono.  “Crossroads,” the set opener, is missing and the tape begins with Ferrone’s count-in to “White Room.”

“I Shot The Sheriff” is introduced as by Clapton as “an old Bob Marley number.”  Several times during “Wonderful Tonight” someone, beginning at 2:01, someone hits the drum machine that is used for “Hung Up On Your Love.”

After that song Clapton introduces the new song “Miss You” as something “from the other end of the spectrum.”

“Same Old Blues” lasts twenty minutes and is the centerpiece of the set with Clapton, East and Knopfler all taking solos.  But the highlight is Clapton’s solo in “Holy Mother.”  He’s able to raise the song’s eighties neon pastel glow to the heights of sublimity.

Romantic Isolation is packaged in a six disc fatboy jewel case.  A two-sided insert has photographs of the master cassettes used, and the two four page inserts have the track listing and band line ups for each of the three concerts with period photographs.  The front and back cover is a bit puzzling with a close up of Clapton’s hair.  For those who love the late eighties Clapton, this is a fantastic release worth having.

NOTES:
9-23-71, source 5
First Attack of the Rising of the Sun (Empress Valley, 4cd), Meet the Led Zeppelin (Wendy Records), Rock Carnival (Empress Valley, 5cd), & Timeless Rock (Watchtower, 3cd & 4cd)
(These labels all use a different mixture of three tapes.)
The first three cds of EV’s “First Attack” presents the fifth audience source for this show and is very good. It is almost complete both musically and between songs. Most of the introduction, a little tape after Stairway and Celebration Day are borrowed from source 1. Source 3 is used for a few seconds just before Whole Lotta Love. Two separate places in WLL are borrowed from source 1, for a total of one minute.
EV’s cds 3 and 4 of “Rock Carnival” (2016 5cd box) reissue the audio from the first three cds of “First Attack,” consolidated to two discs. They didn’t bother removing the big overlap found between cds 2 and 3 of the original title, so it’s that audio repeated back to back in the middle of disc 4 on the new double disc reissue.
Watchtower’s title is also a 3 source mix. Like EV, musically it probably uses every available second from the fifth source. The introduction on this one is entirely from source four. Dazed has two digital glitches that aren’t found on EV or Wendy. The gap after Stairway is filled (also) by source 1. Watchtower shares the same cuts in WLL but elects to use source 3 for the first gap. For the second cut, Watchtower left it alone. Watchtower reissued the title in August 2008. It has the same disc times and content as the original.
Wendy's title starts out with source one's introduction and uses it again after Stairway. The rest of the title relies mostly on source five, but elects to use source three for Whole Lotta Love.
Watchtower made fewer splices. EV and Wendy have louder music and background noise than Watchtower just a different equalization.

NOTES:
In less than a year Tarantura has put their stamp on the KISS Kollectors community with their releases documenting the 1977 and 1978 Japanese tours featuring Mr. Peach recordings to boot (no pun intended).

The fourth in the series features the second show on the bands 1978 Japanese tour to promote the Alive II record, all of the five shows were played at the Budokan Hall in Tokyo. The recording quality is what we have come to expect from a Peach recording, excellent sounding well balanced throughout with all instruments and vocals coming through nicely with virtually no audience interference close to the microphones, another superb document.

The second night at the Budokan has the band in excellent shape and they put on a fantastic, well played concert for a crowd who, like the previous night, are behind the band 110% and make the listening experience much more enjoyable. After obligatory “ALRIGHT TOKYO……You wanted the best and you got the best….the hottest band in the world….KISS” the band storm the stage and rip into the opening salvo of I Stole Your Love and King Of The Night Time World amid the sounds of exploding pyro and the roar of the audience who scream loudly and passionately for the band.

The band play the same set list as the previous evening and features well paced selections that focus on the post ALIVE ! records with a few of the klassics thrown in. Paul greets the crowd and tests the waters immediately getting the crowd to cheer “All right” and “Rock and roll ” and gets the girls to cheer “HELLO!” and asks to meet them in the Ladies Room and like the previous evening Paul is speaking a little slower and more precise as he communicates with the audience. The band’s playing is tight and again Peter is in great shape his drums fills are spot on as they follow with a rousing Firehouse and Love Gun, Ace nails his solo on the latter. Paul keeps the between song banter to a minimum and they continue to crank them out effortlessly.

What is interesting is the audience, they cheer and scream throughout the show keeping an incredible pace. Sometimes when you listen to live albums the audience noise sounds like it was dubbed on but the KISS audience are devoted and the fifth member of the band. During Shock Me the band helps Ace sing the chorus and again he is playing very well and while his solo goes through the familiar routine his playing is fast and very fluent.

The audience is at a fevered pitch and they are incredibly loud as they sing the chorus of Dr.Love, they even rival Paul’s singing during the song. They actually build momentum as the concert goes on ard help the band sing Shout It Out Loud and at its conclusion are almost deafening. They tone down for the beginning of Gene’s solo, it is interesting tonight as he uses some effect on his bass that gives it a tinny and echoes effect reminding of nails on a chalk board as he attempts to restore order with God Of Thunder.

The song is heavy and epic sounding and again Peter plays the marching pattern perfectly and in my opinion his drumming is what gives the song the demonic undertone. As usual the song evolves into a four minute drum solo, it sounds at times as if the days the band spent touring with Rush and the close relationship the two drummers had helped influence Peters drumming.

He had a large kit with a variety of different drums and utilized them during this very enjoyable solo punctuated by use of his gong as the band again takes the stage for the Thunder coda. Peter is having a great night, he is playing and singing his ass off, you can clearly hear his back ground vocals during Rock And Roll All Nite and can clearly tell he is enjoying himself.

The song is followed by thunderous applause and clapping and the war cry is “WE WANT KISS…WE WANT KISS” that goes on for a full three and half minutes until the crowd is rewarded with Detroit Rock City, again punctuated by explosion. The crowd is on spot for the “Get Up………Get Down part, the harmonized guitar solo by Ace and Paul is perfect. The song is followed by the “WE WANT KISS” chants that leads to a beautiful rendition of Beth that brings the house down, Peter lets out a “whoo” obviously overtaken with the overwhelming love from the audience who politely clap during the song. There is only one song that can finish off the crowd, Black Diamond.

The “WE WANT KISS” chants stop as Paul takes the stage, the audience goes completely bonkers as he interacts with them before playing the songs gentle opening chords. I always loved the songs use of vocal harmonizing and the interplay of Paul and Peter, the latter’s gritty style is matched perfectly with the lyrical content of the one of the bands best songs. Ace wrings out the emotion during his solo and the band finishes with the bombastic use of theatrics and pyrotechnics that leaves the crowd cheering, some like wild beasts ! The house lights come up and closing announcement is made before the recording ends.

Tarantura must given props for their KISS releases, all are beautifully packaged in glossy gatefold sleeves, this one is no different. The front cover is a great shot of the band putting on their make up prior to the show. The sleeve center has shots of the master cassettes and black and white pictures of the band in a back stage dressing / tuning room with cartoon like balloons with Japanese captions and four separate photos of the band members sans make up. The set even comes with a OBI strip and the picture cds are a work of art, with the cover being on disc one and a shot of Peter on the second. With the 1978 tours being very poorly documented this release is a must have and very highly recommended.
