NOTES:

Dan Lampinski recorded over 100 concerts in the Providence/Boston area, mostly between 1974 and 1978. His earliest recordings were made with an internal microphone deck, and though they are somewhat lo-fi compared to his later work, some very great moments in rock history were captured for posterity. In late 1974 he bought a Sony TC-152SD tape recorder, a Sony ECM-99 stereo microphone, and began using Maxell cassettes. He was also fortunate enough to have a friend who provided excellent taping seats for many shows, resulting in high quality recordings. In 1977, he switched over to a Nakamichi 550 tape recorder, two Nakamichi CM-300 microphones, and continued using Maxell cassettes.

He recorded many of the major 70's bands: Yes, Genesis, Pink Floyd, Queen, Blue Oyster Cult, Frank Zappa, Jethro Tull, ELP, Kiss, Black Sabbath, The Who, Al Stewart, Alice Cooper, Jeff Beck, Bruce Springsteen, Supertramp, Jean-Luc Ponty, Moody Blues, Neil Young, The Faces, Rush, Rick Wakeman, Kansas, as well as several "under the radar" acts.

Since Dan never traded copies of his recordings, they are all essentially uncirculated. Some copies were made for friends, but these releases are the first time most of these recordings have ever seen the light of day, and are direct from his master cassettes. No EQ'ing has been done to any of the transfers. Feel free to EQ, matrix, patch, etc and re-post if you like, just give Dan credit for the original recording.

Dan was very meticulous about taking good care of his tapes and is very pleased that these recordings will now circulate among the trading community. Please honour his kindness and generosity by sharing these recordings freely.

Paul McCartney - My Love (2001) FLAC

GENRE: Rock
FORMAT: Lossless (Flac)
SIZE: 266 mb (3% Recovery)

Tracks 1-13 are from the original vinyl boot “James Paul McCartney”. There were several versions of this in circulation from 1973 to about 1975. My copy is from one of the Berkley Deluxe B&W cover editions. It was fundamentally a soundtrack to the TV special although the running order of the songs were reconstructed. Side one of the boot consisted of tracks 1-6 which are all live performances broadcast on the show. Tracks 7,8 and 9 are regular studio tracks which were essentially included to pad out the LP. Tracks 10-13 again are  from the TV special.
Track 14 was also from the TV special. Track 15 is a stereo outtake from the TV special. The next track, 16, is an unreleased Wings studio recording from 1972. 17 is a rehearsal that was from a radio broadcast; WRKO “Now” 1-13-72. 18 is the complete demo recorded around 1972. This version was broadcast on a Boston “Breakfast with the Beatles” show back in the mid 80’s. The final three tracks are 1st generation copies from the “One Hand Clapping” soundtrack.

NOTES:
Raising Sand was released in October 2007, right in the middle of the long preparations for Led Zeppelin’s reunion for the Ahmet Ertegun tribute to be held in December.  What got lost in all the rhetoric of Zeppelin’s reunion and reformation was that Robert Plant’s album with Allison Krauss was close to the best work he’s ever done.

This effort was confirmed when they won five Grammy awards including album of the year, awards for Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals for “Rich Woman”, Best Country Collaboration with Vocals for “Killing The Blues”, and Best Contemporary Folk/Americana Album for Raising Sand and a Grammy in 2008 for “Gone, Gone, Gone.”

Your Long Journey documents the June 13th appearance in Maryland.  Wardour use a professional sounding source.  They call it a soundboard, it’s most likely a well-balanced ALD recording.  The mix in the music is perfect and the audience noise is faintly heard.  With so few silver pressed titles from this tour, this is worth having for the clarity and level of performance.

The setlist remains unchanged from others on the US tour.  “Rich Woman,” the first song on the album also begins the show, followed by the Ray Charles cover “Leave My Woman Alone” and the Led Zeppelin cover “Black Dog” rearranged in a minor key for banjo, acoustic bass and guitar.

Plant introduces “the Raising Sand revue” before introducing Allison Krauss to sing “Sister Rosetta Goes Before Us.”  One of the early highlights of the set is “In The Mood,” the scant reference to Plant’s early solo output.  Played extremely mellow and upbeat, it segues into Krauss singing the traditional folk ballad “Matty Groves.”  The gravity of the subject, a story of an adulterous tryst, provides deep dissonance to Plant’s joyful exclamations.  It is one of the most brilliant arrangements of the night.

After they sing “Black Country Woman” T Bone Burnett has a two song interlude.  “Bon Tomps Roule” and “Shut It Tight” envelop his exclamations about the great vibe in Washington D.C.

Krauss has her little interlude with “Trampled Rose” and the sublime “Down To The River To Pray.”  Plant sneaks onstage to join her by singing harmony.

After “Killing The Blues” Plant speaks about the depth of American  music and how T Bone Burnett introduced him to the work of Townes Van Zandt.  The follow with a cover of Van Zandt’s “Nothin’.”  The show ends with extraordinary versions of “The Battle Of Evermore” and “Please Read The Letter” with a cover of “Gone Gone Gone” closing the show.

Before the encores Plant tells the audience about a phone call he received from former Led Zeppelin tour manager Richard Cole.  He was reminded that back in May 1969 Led Zeppelin opened for The Who at the Merriweather Post Pavilion calling the headliners “that band, those miserable bastards,” and there was so much damage caused that night that they had to give their earnings back. This brings great cheers among the crowd to which he cheekily followed up with “And next week, Iron Maiden!”

The encores seem a little subdued when they sing “Your Long Journey.” T-Bone Burnett mentioned their sadness of the news of Tim Russert’s passing earlier in the day, and he dedicated the song to him.

Your Long Journey is an excellent release and is worth having even if this would be your only show from the Plant / Krauss tour.  Even though Wardour’s first two titles were Robert Plant titles, they’ve unfortunately not been prolific in producing them.  But this one is one of their best and worth having.

The Beatles - Rarer Than Rare (Remastered Edition 2001) FLAC

GENRE: Rock
FORMAT: Lossless (Flac)
SIZE: 285 mb (3% Recovery)

Restored and/or recompiled from the 1978 2LP set on White Knight WK-271. Remasters Workshop – RMW 092
Many of the recordings on this set have been replaced by upgraded audio sources that came out in the years since the album was released. This was not only due to the often poor quality of the record sources, but also the abysmal pressing quality, particularly of disc 2. In order to fit both LPs on 1 CD, one track was omitted: "Oh My Love" by The Wackers, which was not the Lennon demo it is claimed to be.

NOTES:
Reel Time Trip is another Rolling Stones outtakes collection on Scorpio, the label who have produced many definitive collections in the past (including the Time Trip series and the Genuine Black Box 1961 1974 issued last year).  There are several outstanding virtues which make this release attractive.

The first track is a never before released demo from Little Boy Blue & The Blue Boys.  Recorded in December 1961, this was recorded in the back room of Dick Taylors’ parents home with the band consisting of Mick Jagger on vocal, Keith Richard and Bob Beckwith on guitars, Dick Taylor on bass and Allen Etherington on percussion.  “You’re Right, I’m Left, She’s Gone” is recorded in very good mono.

Chuck Berry was the biggest influence upon the Stones.  The second Little Boy Blue & The Blue Boys demo, recorded a month later, is comprised of three Berry covers ”Johnny B. Goode,” “Little Queenie” and “Beautiful Delilah.”  However, it is interesting to note that the first demo session has “You’re Right, I’m Left, She’s Gone” because it was recorded by Elvis Presley and was issued as the B-side to “Baby, Let’s Play House” on Sun Records issued in April 1955.  Very rarely did the Stones reference Elvis and the demo offers a glimpse into their early inspirations.

The rest of the tracks, according to the liner notes, are “transferred from the original audio tapes on an Ampex 440 B2 audio tape recorder to Digidesign 002 audio Interface to Pro Tools 24/96 wav to DVD and transferred to cd and re sampled from 24/96 to 16/44.1 using Peak 6.0 for MAC.”

The sound quality has never sounded as good, especially on the tracks recorded in the 1960?s.  The final three tracks, “Silver Train,” “Dancing With Mr. D” and “Criss Cross Man” have faint traces of tape hiss, but are very clear and enjoyable nevertheless.

Reel Time Trip is packaged in a standard jewel case with classy looking glossy paper inserts and a very thick booklet with detailed liner notes for each track.  Scorpio have been at the forefront in bringing new Rolling Stones outtakes to the collecting community and score high for the new demo of “You’re Right, I’m Left, She’s Gone.”  They also score high for the significant upgrade in sound quality in the other tracks contained on the disc.
